A Few of My Favorite Things...

Yesterday I bombed hard in the wonderful world of thrifting but today was a new day filled with new promise. It started off with high hopes.I went to an antique mall in Fallbrook that was going out of business, and frankly I could see why!The lady was nothing less than unpleasant and NOTHING was priced, she acted annoyed when I'd ask her what the prices were on something.I'd been in there one other time before and remember the prices being the EXACT SAME as last time.I asked her about sale prices since that's what they had advertised on Craig's List but she said what didn't sell was going to the costume shop next door that her family also owns.Well, good luck to you lady you're going to have a VERY overcrowded costume shop it looks like!

I did manage to find a pair of sunglasses and a cute kelly green coat with leopard print trim that will also be going in my shop but the icing on the cake is when I thanked her for my purchase as I was leaving she said nothing back and went back to complaining to I'm assuming was her mother that the store belongs to,yikes!Bad business I couldn't wait to run far,far away from that place.I just felt horribly bad for all the pretty vintage left behind.

My mom, kids and I went into another thrift store where I got a cute Vera scarf for my shop, for myself a vintage Irish wool beret with cute pompom on it.I'll show that off at a later date as it was miserably hot today and I wasn't about to put wool anywhere near my head.Passing the glass counter I noticed a rack of bracelets.I asked for this one and sure enough for $1.00 I had just found myself a new bakelite bangle. The deal was worth the very weird look the old lady at the thrift store gave me when she saw me rub and sniff the bracelet. Its a look I'm quite use to at this point in my life.

We took a short break from the thrift shops to hit up one of the delicious Mexican joints in town.I treated us since the kids had been such good sports the whole time and my mom was nice enough to cart us around. After lunch the last shop ended up being a big win!I picked up some cute hats and veils for the my shop and costume jewelry. But when I spotted the seahorse lucite earrings I knew those were never going to make it into my shop. When it comes to bakelite or lucite I more often than not end up keeping it for my personal collection.

I have to say that the last 2 place we went to had a nice staff and was so refreshing after the mega beast we'd dealt with at the antique store. This last thrift had a few awkward moments though as one lady kept tilting her head and smiling at me,then she'd let out a sigh.I think she realized I noticed and confessed that I looked exactly like her sons ex-fiancee who she apparently really liked and missed...I wasn't really sure what to say other than sorry. She commented about not being able to lead their lives for them and continued to stare at me smiling till we left, hahaha! She was so sweet but yeah a tad awkward indeed.

Today also made me realize how much I don't really care for other peoples children...or other parents inability to parent their child I should say.Heidi was playing on the floor with one of the stuffed animals by my feet as I fingered through the racks when I noticed a little boy standing over her.He was leaning over her head when I saw him start to drool over her!!!I think it got about 3 inches in length before I found myself shouting "Oh my god are you serious? What is wrong with you?!Don't do that to her!"He look startled and apologized before running to his mother who I suppose instead of correcting him for that decided to make conversation with my daughter.

She told her she was pretty and then asked how old she was.Heidi looked at her and said "WHAT?Are you serious? You've got to be kidding me" and I could feel my stomach flip and my inner voice questioning what in gods name was going to come out of her mouth next and kicking myself for blurting out what I had at the boy,ah maybe I should have said it nicer? But ew he was trying to spit on my kid. Then she uttered the following "a LADY never reveals her real age",that little gem broke the tension and everyone in the store had a good giggle over it.I think watching classic movies in front of her has DEFINITELY given her a flare for the dramatics but she also says some witty little things for a 3 year old.

  4. Big congrats on your $1 bakelite steal! I hate it when people in shops give you attitude. Er -you are a SALES person, isn't the idea of owning a shop to SELL stuff?!! Good for your daughter standing up for herself too, she sounds like a proper little lady :)

  5. Oh that is hilarious about what your little girl said. Good for her !!
And that first shop owner, I've been in shops like that and really why do they even have them if all they can do is be rude like that to customers.

  7. Wow drooling on your kid?? I think you were totally in line with what you said. Yuck.

I hate sales people and shop owners who don't know how to treat customers. Neglecting to say 'thank you' and staring at customers and sighing is most definitely NOT a good business practice. Why are so many people clueless about this stuff? I recently went into a small organic beauty store, where 3 employees were huddled around the cash register talking. They all turned to say hi when I came in, but it was clear that I had disrupted some kind of staff meeting. So instead of breaking up and letting me (the customer) shop in peace, they stayed there trying to talk in hushed tones while I stood maybe 3 feet away. It sounded like they were unhappy with someone, and they were talking about how to 'deal with her'. OMG I'm a customer in your store and I can hear you!! So unprofessional and made me feel like a nuisance, you know, coming into their shop during OPEN hours. I absolutely hate that kind of service, if you don't want to deal with customers why do you have a store??

p.s. I love those earrings too!

  9. You may have some miserable shop owners, but at least you can find a bakelite bracelet for $1. Never manage to find anything like that here in Australia! And what a character your daughter is going to be!
