After falling in love with one I called the rescue to check to see if my application had gone through.Instead they ripped my heart out by telling me that they wouldn't adopt to me because I had children under the age of 8!The thing about Boston Terriers is that they make for great family dogs so I was upset by this but at the same time I understood.Rescues are rather militant in their adopting standards.I've joke with friends before that its harder to adopt from animal rescues than it is a human!
Thankfully the woman I spoke to didn't totally dismiss me and did give me the delightful news that though THEY couldn't adopt to me a local shelter had received a Boston and though he wasn't up for adoption yet to go check him out.Tuesday we did exactly that and though he appeared scared and distracted from the other dogs barking I knew he was going to work out perfect for us.

He was up for adoption today so since I had been tipped off I had first dibs on him. This morning as I got ready I kept worrying that maybe his owner had claimed him yesterday and he wouldn't be there.Fortunately he was!It makes me sad to know he was a stray,I hate to think someone out there has lost their pet but I was also shocked no one had claimed him already,he's a doll!
After an hour meeting with him to see how he'd do around the kids and us $35.00 later he was ours!I placed the 20 inch spiked leather collar we bought him and his new leash, dubbed him Lug Nut von Krankenshaft (Lug Nut or Lugs for short) and headed home to meet our Ollie von Frankenfurter (also known as just Ollie).Thankfully that went off without too much incident.Only "bad" thing that happened was after sniffing eachother Lug Nut decided to drop a deuce in front of Ollie...he's house trained so we chalked it up to him marking his territory *shrugs*

Right now Lug and Ollie are happily snoring away.Lug Nut is 7 and Ollie is only 2 so Ollie tends to run circles around him.I'm sure he'll have more energy once he drops some of his extra weight but he's a big love bug that shows no signs of aggression towards us,the kids or Ollie.

I'm delighted that even though I couldn't adopt through the rescue that at least I was able to get a shelter dog.I'd much rather give a dog out there a home that NEEDS one and not lining the pocket of some breeder. It depressed me greatly to see so many dogs in there that didn't get a home. The SWEETEST lab was in there with a "last chance" sign yesterday.Today she was gone.I keep telling myself she got adopted and its ok but a nagging part of me knows she was probably euthanized.I just want to urge anyone looking for a pet that shelters are filled with loving animals that need a home.Even if you prefer pure bred dogs get in contact with a rescue for THAT breed, they may be able to tip you off to a shelter like what happened with me!
