My love for vintage costume jewelry started early.I remember as a child being given a few tins of vintage costume jewelry to play with by my grandmothers. In fact my first piece of bakelite was a a set of 3 root beer swirl spacer bracelets!I still have 1 but the others much like most of the contents of the tin boxes were taken out and lost along the sands of time...yes,I kick myself for this but I was a kid and didn't know better.I took pretty good care of most of my stuff but kids still lose things.
Today while trying to clear the clutter of this old house I found one of the tins!I opened it to find a LOT of junk, sewing needles, old lighters,(um why did anyone let me play with this box again?) but my favorites were these:
an old wooden button that's shaped like a bowling ball with a bowling pin hanging from it!I had a vintage golden chain that was looking for a charm so I made the button into a necklace.
other favorites were these pretties.A penguin barrette!Too freakin' cute!I put that in my box of hair stuff to wear at a later date. The cameo is a button and the rhinestone brooch that is missing its the backing now.I have a bag of broken but great vintage jewelry that I want to do something with, these will be making their way into that bag...as soon as I find the bag that is.Oh moving you suck sometimes, especially when the moving process is in limbo for months. But when do finally get to Alaska it will be good,oh yes,it will be.
And today WAS going to be an outfit post BUT I got as far as this shot:
before the kids for me sidetracked and I didn't get to snap a picture for the rest of the day.Don't get me wrong I picked up the camera again MANY times,to get a cute shot of the kids,to get some photos of the merchandise I picked up during my fun thrift score yesterday and to get an outfit post but no,life it just gets in the way of plans sometimes. But for those of you that are visual I had on black Mary Jane's,a vintage black a-line skirt and this black and glitter gold striped 70's tank top I picked up yesterday that you can get a glimpse of.Well,I should get wrapped up here.Need to get my beauty sleep as I will be hitting up the remains of an estate sale tomorrow.I've only had a chance to go vintage hunting once since I've been back in California but it was a well worth it trip! Now I just need the time to get it listed!
That is always awesome, finding things from child hood that are vintage no less. I wish you happy scores at the estate sale tomorrow, and the outfit sounded darling. :)
ReplyDeleteOh I love the penguin barettes, and the brooches are both lovely.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had costume jewelery from my childhood but I was the biggest tomboy and had a compass & pocket knives instead. *lol*
Oh fun!! I love stumbling upon things I used to play with. <3
ReplyDeleteI remember my granny had a bag of old coins that she used to let me play with when I was little - th'penny bits, half crowns - I used to pretend I was living in a Dickens novel :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting - it brought up loads of really nice memories.
Wow that bowling ball and pin looks ace. Good call making it into a necklace :)

Vintage buttons always had so much more personality to them, its a shame people don't think to put detail into them anymore.
